"WE'VE BEEN A SUBARU FAMILY FOR ABOUT 6 YEARS NOW.

WE STARTED WITH A 90 LEGACY SEDAN (WHICH WE STILL HAVE)(250000 MILES AND STILL GOING). SO BUYING ANOTHER SUBARU WAS NOT A QUESTION. THE ONLY PROBLEM WE ARE EXPERIENCING IS A SINGULAR VALVE TICK WHICH IS VERY LOUD IN THE MORNINGS AND SEEMS TO FADE TO AN "ALMOST" GONE TICK AS THE ENGINE WARMS UP. NOTICE I SAID ALMOST! WE"VE GONE TO THREE SUBARU DEALERS, TWO HAVE SAID ,"TO MY WIFE ITS A NATURALLY NOISY ENGINE. OK, THE THIRD DEALER I BROUGHT IT TO AGREED THAT BECAUSE OF THE SOLID LIFTERS IT HAS A NOISY VALVE TRAIN, BUT WHEN I PERSISTED ABOUT THE SINGULAR LOUD TICK COMING FROM CYLINDER 3, HE SAID THAT IT COULD BE FIXED BUT HE MIGHT CAUSE MORE DAMAGE BY OVERCORRECTING THE CLEARANCE FOR THAT VALVE!!! BUT IN THE SAME BREATH SAID IT'S NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. "MY WARRANTY RUNS OUT IN LESS THAN 20K MILES! I DO NOT WANT TO WORRY ABOUT THIS ENGINE DYING ON ME AFTER THE WARRANTY FADES! SO I'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF RESEARCH ON THE VEHICLE. SEEMS THAT THE DOHC IS NOT BEING MADE ANYMORE,!
COSTS LESS TO MAKE,TRUE, BUT I THINK ITS A PROVEN DESIGN. NOTE THAT THE 2.5 SOHC IS STANDARD IN ALL LEGACYS, WHERE 97-99 YOU COULD ONLY GET THE 2.5 DOHC IN THE GT MODEL. SO I GUESS MY ONLY "BEEF"
WITH THIS CAR IS THE POWER PLANT. EVERYTHING ELSE OTHER THAN THE CRAPPY PANASONIC RADIO WHICH DIED, IS GREAT.
--WHAT I INTEND TO DO? "SELL"! BY A 2000 BOTTOM OF THE LINE LEGACY L WITH THE STANDARD 2.5 SOHC, WHICH MY WIFE & I JUST TEST DROVE TODAY & LOVED."

"Are you ready for a retro report? 1990 Legacy L sedan, lived through everything we could throw at it. All I have ever done to this car by the way of repair was: water pump, strut and it seemed to eat front brakes. We limped home from Vermont one day on half an engine, the timing belt after 180,000 miles decided to almost snap sending the passenger side of the motor out of time. This vehicle has been the most reliable vehicle I ever owned. The only thing I have against are the "self locking door locks." Yes, one of the poorest designs out there. Get ready for a series of being stranded outside of the car if you have a tendency to leave keys in the car"
