1 of 4 - 10/31/99 COMPARE: Silverado, F-150
Lou D. of Moorehead Kentucky has already put 50,000 miles on his 1999 Ford F-150. We suspect his Ford is a work truck which is put to the test every day. He gave strong marks in most categories. However, the Ford does show some poor scores in wind noise, transmission and interior quietness. This contrasts with its high marks for handling, ride and stopping. The Ford received "good" marks for handling and wear and tear. A good sign, no repairs were needed in the first 50,000. Overall, a strong score for a sturdy truck. Overall Rating:

TR's thorough response to our survey indicate the Ford F-150 is a tough truck. He has had a few problems along the way but generally is pleased with his truck and would recommend it. The vehicle handles well for a truck with extended cab. There is good power to climb hills and pass. The truck also has a reasonably comfortable interior with seats receiving a good rating. TR identifies several problems. He has noticed excessive wind noise. He has taken the truck back to the dealer four times without having the problem fixed. In fact, he has had a great deal of trouble with the dealer service department fixing the truck. He also had a problem with the fuel gauge which was presumably fixed. In spite of the relatively minor complaints he is pleased with his truck and would recommend it. Overall Rating:

3 of 4 - 10/31/99 COMPARE: Silverado, F-150
CC durable Ford truck has held up well in its first 11,000 miles. His pickup truck has good city and highway handling. Parking is another matter and CC gave it lower marks in this category. Not unexpected. CC is pleased with the drivetrain. He gave it top marks for acceleration, hill climbing and passing. CC's Ford received top marks in other categories as well, such as interior comfort (seats, heat, air) and interior fit and finish. The truck is generally quiet with good marks for general noise and wind noise. The only poor score was for exterior wear and tear. The exterior body integrity is apparently not as solid as it should be. Otherwise, however, CC gave his Ford excellent scores and highly recommends it. Overall Rating:

Owner's Comments: "After 5 years of use, towing and hauling, camping, hunting and fishing. The vehicle has held up. the engine still runs strong and the body looks great." Trouble Free: No Repairs: Auto 4WD lock hubs had to be replaced twice; once under warranty (24K) and once at my expense (60K). Dealer suggested to install manual hubs - I declined. After having numerous attempts to align the front end, throughout five years, it continues to pull to the right - never could figure it out. The engine still runs strong, but steering and handling have been deteriorating even after new shocks (might need a new power steering pump). the wiper's delay switch never worked correctly."
