The Jeep Grand Cherokee was completely revised in 1999. Chrysler claims that nearly every part has been redone from rubber to roof. CC from Nuremberg, Pennsylvania is pleased with her 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. She gave the Jeep a nearly perfect score. Her Jeep has all of the power options and anti-lock brakes. CC noted that her interior is holding up well. This is a good score considering her kids have probably tested the interior's durability. She chose leather which she says is wearing well so far. When a vehicle earns an almost perfect score it is important to note which category was actually marked down. In this case CC marked the Jeep down in "ride" and "exterior trim" Although she is still pleased with the Jeep in both categories her rating suggests that the Jeep still rides more like the truck that it is than a car. Overall, CC loves her Jeep and says she would purchase it again.

We suppose two transmissions in the first 30,000 miles might discourage an owner. There are things MC likes about his Grand Cherokee but the bottom line is he cannot recommend the vehicle. Jeep completely redesigned the Cherokee in 1999 so it might be that the problems noted by MC have been resolved. . MC does like the Jeep's ride and handling. Acceleration, with the 6-cylinder engine still received high marks. However, as MC points out the Jeep really is a small sports utility with very little storage space. The problem was worsened as MC points out "[t]he damn spare tire takes up too much room in the rear cargo area." A problem that has been corrected in the latest Grand Cherokee. MC has also comments on another fact many other sports utility owners seem to realize after they own their vehicle for awhile: "[the] V-6 sucks gas like a starved pig in a slophouse." A problem nothing can fix. The Cherokee's infamously poor brake rotors also irked MC because he had to replace them at 20,000 miles. Chrysler could have, but refused to cover the costs for the prematurely worn rotors.

One of the most significant improvement in the Jeep Grand Cherokee in its most recent revision was the addition of the aluminum SOHC V-8 4.7 liter engine. The transmission has a unique configuration which is much smoother on downshifts during hard acceleration. So how is the new configuration doing? TX is our first reviewing of the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the updated drivetrain. The new technology did well. TX gave his Jeep top marks for transmission and acceleration. The Jeep got second best marks in categories for handling, and wind noise. The Jeep handles well but did not receive the highest marks in categories such as parking, turning and cornering. Overall, there is nothing TX did not like about his Jeep and he gave it the best, or second best scores in every category.

"This has been the most problematic car I have ever owned. Over 25 trips to the dealer in 3 years for repairs; most of the major repairs have not been fixed. Engine pings with 87 octane. 4wd drive is defective. Rattles everywhere.Funny thing is that the same problems seem to appear on the 2000 models demonstrating that the problems have not been addressed."

Trouble-Free: No - "2 defective CD players, defective transfer case, 2 defective door locks, engine pings with 87 octane fuel, defective sensors all over the
place, defective fuel sending unit, and many
many more."

Owner's Comments:

"It's a good station car. It doesn't hold up with commuting. I would only recommend it as a car to take four wheeling. If you buy one don't get any options like a sun roof,(they leak) power windows. Overall I'm not satisfied with it's sluggish performance."
