Sports cars are by their nature impractical. Many do not have a back seat and luggage space is limited. The cars are low to the ground and scrape their bottoms when getting out of a driveway. But, as DJ notes, he did not buy his Miata to be practical. He notes that many of the questions in our survey are "inappropriate" because the questions apparently do not apply to a sports car. True. However, the very best sports car, even though somewhat impractical, still accelerates well and is comfortable. From DJ's survey responses we are still able to tell why he enjoys his Miata so much. The car handles well on the freeway and in the city. The Miata's transmission is excellent and the vehicle stops well. Good scores in categories important to sports cars. Power is good, but not great. The seats are comfortable but did not get top scores. The Miata is admittedly small with limited storage space. Overall, the Miata scored very well. DJ said his Miata is dependable, but he has had some electrical problems and paint problems. (The car was re-painted under warranty.) Overall Rating:

This is my second miata and I'm enjoying the car for the most part. My only real complaint with the car is it needs more horsepower. It comes with a 140 hp engine, a 1.8 liter 4 cyl.. If you were to ask me what would make this car the perfect roadster for 75% of the population, I would give it 175 hp. With 16" wheels, and more interior trim chioises to pick from. My Miata has not been trouble-free. The rear glass window rattles quite a bit and it is noisier than the plastic rear window I had on my '92 Miata.

The two-seat convertible sports car market is growing quite crowded. Each price bracket has several available models. For many years the Miata was the sole player in the $20,000 open-air sports car market. Now, with the introduction of Toyota's MR2 Mazda has some rather stiff competition. According to VA the Miata seems to be up to the challenge. VA has a 2000, base, model in green. He states "[t]his is the second best fun to drive car I have owned in the past 16 years of driving." (His favorite was a 1984 BMW 325i). VA awarded his Miata top marks in categories it would be expected to do well such has handling, cornering and braking. The Miata got top scores for its transmision as well. Guages got good, but not the best rating. VA also marked the Miata down slightly for wind noise, something expected in a convertible. Although the Miata is a small car, VA gave it top marks for ride and comfort. Over the years the Miata has been criticized for poor acceleration, but VA gave it good (but not top) marks for acceleration, passing and hill climbing. The 1.8 liter still pulls this very light car well. Overall an excellent review for a sports car stalwart. ACTUAL SURVEY: 5 - best --1 - worst
Quote: "This is the second best fun to drive car I have ownded in the past 16 years of driving. First is still the '84 BMW 325i that I had while in college. Overall, Miata is the best in value/fun compared to the S2000, Z3, Audi, SLK and those other bigger convertibles." Biographical Information
