OR's Subaru Legacy Outback was purchased in 1998. Since that time OR has put 53,500 miles on his vehicle so he must know his vehicle well. And, he is quite pleased. OR notes that he loves his car. It is his first car and he puts it to good use, carrying up to four adults, scuba gear, kayaks, bikes and camping gear. Most car and SUV shoppers probably think that the smaller SUVs or station wagons probably do not have enough room. OR is satisfied and gives his Subaru the top rating for spaciousness. Everything is a trade-off, so although he may not have all of the room he might have with, say, a Durango, he does get excellent gas mileage for every day driving. OR's Subaru also checks out in the traction department. OR notes that he has been in some "tough spots" and the Outback's all wheel drive pulled him through. Very importantly, OR's Outback has been trouble-free. This is admirable, considering he has over 50,000 on his vehicle. An excellent review for a very versatile vehicle. Overall Rating:

The Subaru Legacy is a versatile vehicle which is especially suited for climate in Sioux Falls. The vehicle gets better gas mileage than larger SUVs so it is more suited to commuting. Its obvious benefit is the all wheel drive which gives great winter traction. However, since BR just bought his Subaru he hasn't been able to comment on that yet. BR of Sioux Falls bought Legacy used, with about 45,000 miles. BR has been very pleased. He hs already put about 3,000 miles on his vehicle and has had no problems. He is pleased with the vehicle's handling, braking and ride. The 2.2 liter (2000 Legacy's have 2.5 liter engines) feels peppy around town but works harder at 75 mph with a full load. The need for more power is reflective n his survey responses which indicates the vehicle is adequate, but could be better, at passing and hill climbing. Other than that, the vehicle received excellent marks and BR recommends the Subaru. Overall Rating:

CV has the newly updated 2000 Subaru Outback. The Subaru has obviously impressed CV as she says her car/suv/wagon gets "good gas mileage, [has] loads of features, plenty of storage space, good handling [and] low price compared to the competition. The competition is the Audi A4 and, possibly, the Volvo V4, to fine marques which appear to be outshined by the Subaru. The car is not perfect, but CV's complaints seem relatively minor. For instance, she lists only three complaints, only one intermittent wiper setting, uncomfortable seats on long trips, and a tendency for rain to pour in when the window is open. In the survey, CV gives her car nearly perfect marks. The only categories which did not receive perfect scores were for parking, cornering, air conditioning, and wind noise. However, she gave the next best rating of "agrees" in those categories. CV did give "neutral" ratings for highway passing and seat comfort. Apparently, the Outback needs a little more mid-range power. Overall, however, an excellent rating for the new incarnation of the Outback. Overall Rating:

The Outback has received generally strong scores. However, DR of Yorktown Heights would not buy his Outback again. He notes that the vehicle had poor and inconsistent braking. Apparently, Subaru denied the problem until it finally issued a recall. Although DR would not buy another Subaru, he generally gave it average scores in handling and acceleration. However, he was not pleased with the Subaru's fit and finish, electrical, or quietness. The braking problem seemed to sour DR on this car. Overall Rating:
