 1989 Jeep Cherokee

Red, 135,000 miles

6 cyl. 4.0 liter engine

The Jeep Cherokee which is the subject of this review is a 1989. Since the Jeep Cherokee has really changed very little over the years we are happy to provide this report. SW states "[t]his Jeep has been a very reliable automobile!" Encouraging words for a vehicle some may shy away from due to concerns about reliability. SW adds that his Jeep still runs like new. The only repairs she mentions are to upgrade the radiator because it ran hot. SW also mentioned that the wind noise in the vehicle on the highway and on the road is quite loud. Storage capacity also could be better. Otherwise, SW is pleased and she recommends this Jeep. However, she has a caveat: she recommends the particular powerplant in her Jeep, the 6 cyl. 4.0 liter engine.

OWNER'S COMMENTS:

"We paid $21,000 for this car and we bought it new. We felt that for the price it was absolutely the best we could buy and we haven't been disappointed. Power is great, this car can out-accelerate almost any car on the road short of sports cars, and is anything but sluggish (like alot of SUVs such as 4runners, explorers, pathfinders and subarus tend to be). We live on top of a very long, steep hill that becomes covered in snow several times throughout the winter. With the great 4WD system and weight distribution, getting up this hill and around anywhere is not a problem. The ABS system keeps us safe when going down. We take our cherokee through very rough conditions off-road several times throughout the summer and have never come close to getting it stuck, or having it overheat. The ride is comfortable, although on the highway wind noise is noticeable. Braking is also good under all conditions, however we have had to bring the car in twice for brake problems and it is still under 30K miles. The CD/tape/radio is also very good. One complaint on a new Cherokee is the tires. Cherokees come with Goodyear Wranglers which seem to wear out quickly and spin more than other tires on wet roads. We recently bought Kelly Safaris which perform much better. The seats sit up very high, this is good for short people like my wife who is 5'6", but I am 6'2" and I sometimes feel like I am looking out the very top of the windshield, instead of the middle. I have an old 1988 model also and I do not have this problem in that car. Trunk space is good, especially if you fold down the back seat, which is an easy one person job. Overall we love our Cherokee and feel that it is a superior vehicle compares to other SUVs which cost thousands of dollars more."

Trouble free = no

Repairs = Brakes worked on twice under 30K. Driver side automatic window motor broke, but was still under warranty.
