1999 - 4.6 DOHC - V8

Cobra

The Mustang Cobra is well-known as an American muscle-car. It is, if anything, slightly outdated. Mechanics are generally solid with Ford's 4.6 V-8. However, JE has been quite displeased with his Mustang. He cannot recommend it and has had numerous problems. He notes that his vehicle has "been in the shop more than out." He notes unusual vibration at freeway speeds. He also complains of other "clunks and pops." He has already (his vehicle has 10,000 miles) noticed blue smoke puffs from the exhaust. He has noticed electrical problems and a brake cable burned. He says the trunk lid is out of alignment and no capable of being repaired. His vehicle has also suffered a horsepower lag caused by an unknown problem. The problems have been so bad JE intends on returning his vehicle to Ford under his state's lemon law.

1999 - 3.8 - V6

Automatic

SF has logged 12,000 miles on her Rio Red Ford Mustang. She is pleased and gave the vehicle excellent marks. She "strongly recommends" the '99 Ford Mustang if [you want] power, body style and a very smooth ride." Who doesn't? SF has the 3.8 liter V-6 and still finds strong power for passing and hill climbing. Handling is, as it should be, excellent. Brakes got good, not great marks. SF gave her Mustang's transmission excellent marks. Interior ergonomics received strong marks. Seats got a good rating. Air conditioning and heater received the best marks. SF gave her Mustang top marks for fit and finish and she says her Mustang is holding up very well as she gave it top marks for interior and exterior wear. SF's Mustang earned excellent marks for ride and it seems to be very quiet without excessive wind noise. Overall, a strong showing for an American Icon. The only problem she identified has been a dashboard rattle which was fixed by the dealer.
