The Mountaineer is really an Explorer with some exterior styling alterations. Mechanically, it is really not different from the Explorer. Yet, the styling differences are enough to make you think it is a different truck. AK is quite pleased with his Mountaineer and gave it strong scores in nearly every category except for brakes and transmission. AK notes "[t]he 1997 was the first year for the Mountaineer..." He recommends the Mountaineer to those who want an SUV "with a little style and refinement, but without the pocket book for a Range Rover." "It is a neat SUV" with a "nice ride." Overall Rating:

Owner's Comments: "The V-6 is too small for such a heavy vehicle, it just doesn't deliver enough torque. The V-6 is much too loud on hard accelleration. How did Ford miss this? The paint is not well adhered to the plastic substrate on the lower sections and comes off easily. This was a big surprise and may well be a serious problem in the future. It really worries me. This would be a really good vehicle if it were equipped with a V-8 engine, assuming it is also a quiter engine. Trouble free so far." Survey's Results:
