Mercury Sable, and its twin, the Ford Taurus, are premier domestic sedans. They are roomy, powerful and dependable. (There has been a complete redesign for 2000.) RD's Sable has generally performed up to expectations. His Sable handles well in the city and highway, although it is not that easy to park. Acceleration is adequate in the city and on the highway but is below average going up hills. The larger engine would be more desirable. The brakes and transmission received the top scores. RD's Sable is new so he still rated the interior and exterior wear as very well. RD notes that his "main objections" are "engine noise and limited entry in the trunk." RD has apparently had a flat tire and the poor access has been frustrating. RD states "whoever designed the storage for the spare tire needs to have his head examine...One has to tear up the trunk carpet to access the spare tire." This was not a problem in earlier Sables which RD says had reasonable access. Overall, a good score. Overall Rating:
