 1996 VW Passat GLS

75,000 mi

1.8-Liter

There is good news and bad news about the Passat. First, the good news. The Passat handles very well. Acceleration, passing and hill climbing received good marks, but not the best. The seats are very comfortable and the air conditioner works well. The highway ride received top marks. Now, the bad news. The car has had transmission and electrical problems. The engine light went on several times and had to be reset, at $50.00 each time. IL also complained about the transmission. Lastly, IL's Passat's braking abilities received a poor mark. The bottom line: in spite of doing some things well, IL cannot recommend the Passat. Although she admits the vehicle was inexpensive, IL suggests the nagging problems were enough to leave her with a sour taste.

"This has been a good car so far,i love the 5 speed tiptronic auto transmission. It is a very quiet car and has many little extras some cars don't have. I have noticed 2 small rattles in the dash, although i have not brought the car back to my dealer yet. The most annoying item on the car is the constant gear hunting that the car does, it's almost like it does quite no where to go. I think for the price of the car and what you get there are better cars out there."

DL'sVW Passat scored very well. DL gave top marks for highway handling and cornering. His Passat is quiet on the raod and he gave top marks for interior noise. DL has already put 11,000 on his vehicle and says there have been no problems so far. Reassuring considering several years ago VW's reputation for dependability was not favorable. DL mentions that he wishes he had ordered the wider wheels which would have made handling even better. DL did his research when shopping for his Passat and says "I still like the Passat over the Accord, Camry or Solara...German engineering is still hard to surpass..."

Owner Comments:

"It's been several months now and there are no problems to note! I still like the color trim and interior choices, even over the new grey color for 2000. the only option I would have liked would have been a large tire/wheel combo. Despite the 15" alloys I opted for...I plan to upgrade to 17" wheels for a more aggressive/sporty look. I still like the Passat over the Accord and Camry or Solara as far as style...German Engineering is still hard to surpass...!"

Owner's Comments:

"The Passat GLS 1.8T is a great car despite its high wind noise and poor AC. Excellent fit and finish. The $25,000 car which looks like a $35,000 one. Sound system is terrific even without the optional monsoon sound. Acceleration is not the greatest but you still can pass cars and climb hills without a sweat. Amenities are plenty. The rear sunshade and folding key are standout features. The seats are super comfortable because of lumbar support. However, the A/C cools slowly. In a hot day, it can take 5 to 10 minutes to cool down the interior. the rear defroster has the same problem. Takes a long time to wipe off the condensation. Wind noise is high but the good sound system can tolerate. The Passat is a great car. If you love it before you drive it you will love it more after your drive it."
